The Consumer Price Index (CPI)
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in the price paid by urban consumers for a fixed market basket of goods and services. The CPI is calculated monthly for two population groups, the CPI-W consisting of urban households whose primary source of income is derived from the employment of wage earners and clerical workers, and the CPI-U consisting of all urban households — including wage earners, clerical, professional, managerial and technical workers, the self-employed, short-term workers, the unemployed, retirees and others not in the labor force.
